The Pilates system was developed in the early years of the 20th century by Joseph Pilates. The system uses fewer movements than many more traditional workouts, and requires that you use more control when making these movements so that they are done in specific ways. There is an emphasis on breathing and using the abdominal muscles in certain ways, and the system often results in greater strength and flexibility without the emphasis on building muscle mass that you find in many other exercise programs.
